Dear Aberdeen Parents, girls and friends,

Dear Aberdeen Parents, girls and friends,

Welcome to the House blog. The aim of this blog is to give you access to non-vital information about the House and College. The girls get involved with so much at the College and I hope to use this forum as a way of keeping you informed of the activities they get involved in.

Please do join in and check it out whenever you can.

Best wishes,

Kate Newson

House Mistress of Aberdeen

Half Term has finally come

Half term has come and what a busy term we have had.  Last night the Middle School Play was a huge success with wonderful performances from Anna Elwin, Ellie Haines, Quiana Higgins and Kate Hughes to name but a few.   Many of the Remove are off on the D of E Silver hike this morning, hopefully they will not get as wet as they did in their trial run at Easter.
College starts back for the Boarders on Sunday 2nd June.

Have a great half term.

Star of the Week: Emily

Emily is star of the week for quietly getting involved in all aspects of College life.   She also celebrates her 14th birthday on Sunday.   Well done and happy birthday.

Saturday night fun at Mertens

The Meten Mash turned out to be a 'Sugar Rush'.   The boys had put on a Chocolate Fountain and goodies to dip.  It was a great night of low key fun.   Just what the doctor order to relief exam stress.  Thank you Mertens.

Happy Birthday to Anna and Belated Birthday to Charlotte

Happy Birthday girls

Swanage Geography Trip

All of the Remove, apart from Laura, who is now 'home alone', are off to Swanage in Dorset today.  They are going for a three day trip to investigate some Human and Physical aspects of Geography which will be used for their controlled assessment early next year.   We hope the weather is kind to them, but I have to say it wouldn't be a Geography field trip without some rain at some point.
I can remember going to The Northern tip of the Saharan Desert to camp for the night as part of a Geography field trip and it rain then!

Star of the week: Tasha

Tasha is also being supportive and caring behind the scenes to many of the girls.  This is to say it is noticed and well done.

Kate Hughes at the Fencing Nationals

Kate represented Sussex in the National Championships in Sheffield.
It was a very high standard. All were in top 3 or 4 of their region and some were 16years old so higher level than she had ever faced. Kate had seven fights. She went out in direct elimination having survived the pools.   Kate came 40th place mark which is more than was expected.

The Sheffield arena was amazing with nearly 40 pistes set up and operating at same time. Kate met some great coaches  and has been offered the opportunity to do some fencing in London in summer.

Teddy Bears Picnic in aid of Alzheimer's.

Tom King taught Classics at Ardingly College for 37 years and was Housemaster of Mertens. He retired in 2002 and shortly afterwards was diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer’s. He is now in a nursing home.
The Alzheimer’s Society is one of our nominated charities for this year and the charity focus event on today focused on this cause.

The weather was fine so a picnic lunch was enjoyed with music on South Quad. Everyone (-well almost) brought their teddy bear!
There was a prize (of a special Ardingly teddy bear – currently on display in the kitchen) for each of the following categories:
·         Best dressed bear
·         Biggest bear
·         Best poem about a bear
Bears were judged in South Quad at lunch time. Poems were submitted by e mail to Mr Lovett by the end of the day on Monday.

Andrea King, Tom’s wife,  kindly agreed to describe the effects of Alzheimer’s from a personal perspective. She will be talking in Mr Lovat’s lab S8 during Tuesday (7th) lunchtime 1:45 – 2:10. You are all invited to come and learn about what Alzheimer’s is, how it affects people and what can be done to help.
